Na Pali o Kaua'i
5' 7" Fish
This custom board was for my cousin, Lynel.
I was born and raised on the Garden Isle but my mother's family lived on the Valley Isle. I made summer trips to Maui and would stay in contact with my cousins via letters. We started exchanging letters (:and cassette tapes:) at a very early age, through high school when I permanently moved to Lahaina, and even through our college years. On the envelopes of our letters we wrote quotations from famous people that inspired us. The collection of envelopes eventually revealed our growth in education and especially in beliefs. The letters stopped when Email and day jobs started so I decided to pay a little homage to our everchanging spirits with this board.
As I've grown, I've realized that those who really inspire me were not from intangible, famous people but from my own family and friends. With that realization, I wrote quotes and advice from family and friends within the cliffs (example: Gramma - "Look wit yo eyes, not wit yo mout").
The below quotation is not from one of my friends or family member, but I kinda know the guy who turned me on to the quote and it kinda brings the piece together.
Every mountain tells a story.
Every river sings a song.
Every bay. Every Island.
We must not forget them.
- King David Kalakaua, the last king of Hawai'i
